My parenting Journey by Janine Hogg

Parenting has never been one-size-fits-all for me. My children have been a mixed bunch from the structured and self-assured to the anxious, withdrawn, and uncertain. Each of them moves through the world differently, and that has been both beautiful and deeply confronting.

There have been moments where I’ve watched one child withdraw completely, unable to express what’s going on inside, while another thrives on routine and certainty. Those moments when they pull away, when they’re sad or distressed and I can’t step in to fix it have been some of the hardest. It’s confusing as a parent, even frightening at times. My instinct has always been to help, to solve, to guide. That’s my job  but there are times when even my professional tools couldn’t reach my own children.

I’ve caught myself saying things like, “Don’t feel like that” or “It’ll be okay,” trying to comfort them, but later realising they heard that as me not understanding or validating their feelings. That was never my intention. I’ve learned that in trying to protect them from pain, I was sometimes denying their truth.

The turning point came when I stopped trying to make the feelings go away and started sitting with them instead. I began to see that every emotion even the hard ones is communication. Behind every meltdown, every shutdown, every silence is a nervous system trying to find safety.

Through studying DBT, neuroscience, and neuro-affirming approaches, I learned that my role isn’t to fix my children’s emotions but to help them feel safe enough to experience them. That’s when everything began to shift not because the challenges disappeared, but because we learned how to move through them together.

Now, I help other parents and children find that same balance between guiding and listening, protecting and validating. I support families to understand the brain behind behaviour, to replace guilt with compassion, and to find calm through connection.

Because healing doesn’t happen when we make emotions go away. It happens when we learn to feel them safely together.
